Tuesday - The Letter of James (James 3:5-6)

Welcome to Daily Prayer as we continue our series in the book of James, focusing on chapter 3, verses 1-12, and the value of consecrating our lips to avoid the potential damage caused by our tongue.

I'm using a simple acrostic: P-R-A-Y, where we will:

Pause and praise,

Read and reflect on the scripture,

Ask God to speak through His Word, and

Yield in obedience.

As we pause, let's set our focus upon the Lord, who alone is worthy of our affection and devotion.

Burn away the dross in our lives, Lord, and remove the impurities from our hearts that we may draw near and hear Your word to us this day.

How we praise You for Your perfect law that refreshes the soul. Thank You for Your precepts, which are right and give joy to my heart. Your pure commands give light to my eyes. How I long to see You rightly.

Now let's read and reflect on today's scripture found in James 3:5–6:

"So also the tongue is a small member, yet it boasts of great things. How great a forest is set ablaze by such a small fire! And the tongue is a fire, a world of unrighteousness. The tongue is set among our members, staining the whole body, setting on fire the entire course of life, and set on fire by hell."

As I imagine raging forest fires bringing vast destruction, these words about my tongue are sobering. My words can bring great damage to others and potentially destroy relationships.

Though this is a difficult word to hear, Lord, I ask You to examine my life and the impact of my words. Remind me of harmful words that I have spoken to others or damage that my tongue has caused. I repent of speaking words that do not agree with Your word. I recognize that those words cannot be taken back, but I believe that You can bring healing where I have brought pain. I believe Your word that says death and life are in the power of the tongue. So enable me now to speak life-giving words into the places I have destroyed. Direct my steps to those whom I should approach and seek forgiveness.

Proverbs 26:20 says, "For lack of wood the fire goes out, and where there is no whisperer, quarreling ceases."

Show me any area where I am stoking the fire and have become that whisperer, causing contention to grow. Cause us as Your body to be especially mindful of the ways that our social media responses are fueling destructive flames.

I also bring to You the places within my soul that have been scorched by the harsh words of others. Lord, would You release healing to my wounds and break the power of any and every word curse that has been spoken over me and continues to hold authority in my life? Restore my soul.

As we listen to this passage again, allow the Holy Spirit to expose any area that needs to be examined.

Consider how Isaiah yielded and his response when he became aware of the contrast between his words and God's holiness: "Woe is me! For I am ruined; because I am a man of unclean lips, and I live among a people of unclean lips; for my eyes have seen the King, the Lord of hosts!"

As You touched the mouth of Isaiah with a burning coal, Lord, touch my lips this day. Remind us again that by Your death, our sin is forgiven. We can live and speak differently.

Let's listen and ask the Lord to commit to memory our scripture verse for the week:

"Everyone should be quick to listen, slow to speak and slow to become angry." — James 1:19

Send the healing rain of Your Spirit now to all who have been wounded by destructive words. Make us a people whose words will bring forth life and healing.
