Friday - The Letter of James (James 2:25-26)

Welcome to Daily Prayer. 

Today, let’s remember that God’s grace reaches people with complicated lives and painful histories. That includes us. We can come to him because of what Jesus has done. 

Father, today I give everyone and everything to you. Thank you for receiving me. Help me understand your mercy more deeply and let it change the way I see the people around me.

James 2:25–26

“And in the same way was not also Rahab the prostitute justified by works when she received the messengers and sent them out by another way? For as the body apart from the spirit is dead, so also faith apart from works is dead.”

Ask God to help you remember this verse when an opportunity to love someone comes today.

A Prayer of Thanksgiving

Father, thank you that I am never beyond your help. You know my history. You know the choices I regret and the things I still struggle to believe about myself. Through Jesus, you have given me forgiveness, family, and a future. I need to remember how much I’ve been given. When shame tells me to hide, help me come to you. When I think I have nothing useful to offer, remind me that you are still working in my life.

Thank you for every person who has shown me patience. Thank you for the kindness I didn’t earn and the help I couldn’t have managed without. Your mercy has carried me through so much. Please let that gratitude stay with me and make me more generous toward others.

A Prayer of Petition

Father, help me welcome people with the mercy you’ve shown me. Forgive me for deciding who someone is before I’ve taken time to know them. You know the whole story. I usually know very little. Give me a heart that is willing to listen. 

Who needs to be included today? Who is lost, wondering if anyone notices their pain? Help me notice. Give me courage to start conversations. And Lord, for the person who feels too ashamed to come near you, please give them hope. Help them hear the good news of Jesus and believe that your grace is for them, too. Help me speak honestly about your goodness and my own need for mercy. Don’t let embarrassment or inconvenience keep me from loving someone you have placed in front of me.

Closing Prayer

Father, thank you for the way you receive me completely. As I go, help me remember that everyone I meet has a story I don’t fully understand. Make me humble, curious, and kind. Let my gratitude and my faith be active in a way that someone can experience you today. In Jesus’ name, amen.
