Obedient Hope

• Read Matthew 1:18-25 •
Joseph’s story is one of quiet courage. When he learned that Mary was expecting a child, his world must have felt like it was collapsing. By all appearances, the woman he loved had betrayed him. Scripture tells us that Joseph was a righteous man who didn’t want to disgrace her, so he planned to end things quietly.
Yet before he could act, an angel appeared in a dream and said, “Do not be afraid to take Mary as your wife, for what is conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit.”
Hope came to Joseph in a way that didn’t make sense. It required obedience before understanding. In that moment, Joseph chose faith over fear, trust over appearances, and obedience over reputation. He didn’t wait until everything was clear—he simply obeyed.
That is what obedient hope looks like: acting in faith because you trust the character of God, even when you can’t see the outcome.
Advent invites us to that same kind of hope. It’s not a passive waiting, but an active surrender to the will of God. Joseph’s “yes” paved the way for the coming of the Savior. His obedience made room for God’s promise to take on flesh. Every time we choose to trust and obey in uncertainty, we too make space for Christ to be revealed in and through us.
Sometimes, God’s plans interrupt ours. We may feel confused, disappointed, or even fearful—but obedient hope says, “Lord, I will trust You anyway.” It believes that behind every divine disruption is the faithful heart of a Father who never fails to redeem what He begins.
Advent reminds us that hope is not wishful thinking—it’s the confident expectation that God is at work, even in the waiting, and that His promises are worth our obedience.
This season, may we respond like Joseph—quietly, faithfully, and courageously. May our obedience become a doorway for God’s hope to shine into the world around us.
PRAYER:
Heavenly Father, thank You for the example of Joseph and the gift of obedient hope. Teach me to trust You when I don’t understand, to listen when You speak, and to follow even when it costs me. Let my obedience make room for Your Son to be seen in my life. Amen.
