Demonstrated Love
----
Matthew 25:37–40
…Lord, when did we see You hungry, or thirsty and give You a drink? When did we see You a stranger and take You in, or naked and clothe You? Or when did we see You sick, or in prison, and come to You? And the King will answer and say to them, ‘Assuredly, I say to you, inasmuch as you did it to one of the least of these My brethren, you did it to Me.’
Annette and Jeff serve in Mulago, Uganda’s largest government hospital. Along with a team of fourteen volunteers, they faithfully give their time to love and serve those most people overlook—the prisoners, the thieves, the abandoned, and the destitute. They demonstrate Christ’s love in tangible ways: bathing, dressing, feeding, counseling, and praying for the sick and forgotten.
One day, a man approached them in the hospital corridor. He was not in his right mind—restless, tormented, and searching for something he couldn’t name. He saw two people who, on the outside, looked no different to others in the hospital corridor. Yet somehow, he knew. He fell at their feet, crying out that he had been looking for them. Annette and Jeff looked at him with surprise, then with compassion, remembering how Jesus met a man tormented by spirits and brought him peace.
Annette led the man in a prayer of salvation, and together they prayed for his deliverance. With tears of gratitude to Jesus, and a new hope in his heart the man stood, shook himself violently, and in a normal voice said “I feel better now! With newfound strength, he led Annette and Jeff to the locked psychiatric ward, insisting the guard open it because “there are eleven others who need to meet Jesus.” That day the greatest of miracles took place when 12 troubled souls met with their Savior and found freedom.
There are people all around us who are like that man- who are searching, who are hurting, who are abused and downtrodden. People who are unloved and angry with the world, and even angry at God. People who are wanting something, but not knowing what. Some put on a false front, and others are just downright ornery. Then there are people like Annette and Jeff who prepare and position themselves for that unexpected encounter. They show love through their words and actions to a hurting people.
PRAYER:
Lord, help us to overcome the fear of failure and the fear of man. Give us eyes to see the hurting and hearts ready to respond. Empower us to go into all the world—whether across the street or across the ocean—to share Your love as You commanded. We have received Your love; now help us put it into action as we share the unfailing love of Jesus. Amen.
