Friday - The Letter of James (James 4:17)

Oct 23, 2026

Welcome to Daily Prayer.

Today, James turns our attention to the good we already know to do. Sometimes our decisions require prayer, or counsel, and steps of faith. But sometimes our next faithful step is clear, but the thing we lack is simply willing obedience. Let’s take a moment to prepare our hearts and minds before the Lord. Let’s ask God to quiet our excuses and stir our hearts to respond with love.

Today’s Scripture is also our Memory Verse for the Week

James 4:17

If anyone, then, knows the good they ought to do and doesn’t do it, it is sin for them.

Let’s say it again.

James 4:17

If anyone, then, knows the good they ought to do and doesn’t do it, it is sin for them.

A Prayer of Confession

Merciful Father, we confess our delayed obedience is really just disobedience.

There have been times when we knew someone needed encouragement and remained silent. We saw an opportunity to help and looked away. We recognized a responsibility and kept finding reasons to postpone it. There have been moments we sensed your Spirit leading us, but we chose not to act.

Sometimes we’re afraid. Sometimes we were distracted or unwilling to be inconvenienced. You know the truth of our hearts, and we bring it honestly before You.

Forgive us. Help us receive Your mercy and respond with renewed obedience. Where repair is possible, show us how to begin. Where an opportunity has passed, help us learn and become more attentive. Make us faithful with what You have entrusted to us.

Take several moments to ask God to speak to you about an area you have resisted obedience.

Father, help us. We want to be willing and joyful disciples. Amen.

A Prayer of Petition

Jesus, give us courage to do the good we know to do. If we need to apologize, help us speak honestly and take responsibility. If we need to keep a promise, help us follow through. If we need to offer practical support, make us generous with the resources we can share.

When doing what is right may cost us comfort or approval, strengthen our resolve. Keep us from waiting until obedience feels easy. Give us gentleness as well as courage. Help us choose words that honor others and actions that respect their dignity. Teach us to offer help thoughtfully, listening to what is actually needed.

Make our next step clear and practical. Help us decide when to act, what to say, and how to prepare.

Take a few moments to ask God for courage for one specific act of obedience.

Father, we offer You our willingness. Help us carry it into action. Amen.

A Prayer of Intercession

Father, we pray for our churches, families, and communities. Make us people who respond to needs with wisdom and compassion. Help us notice those who are easily overlooked: the person who is lonely, the newcomer who feels uncertain, the family under financial strain, and the volunteer who is quietly exhausted.

Give us eyes to see the open doors to show compassion. We want to bring food where there is hunger, companionship where there is isolation, and encouragement where people feel overwhelmed.

Give our communities courage to address wrongdoing and protect those who are vulnerable. Help us listen carefully when someone asks for help.

Show each of us the part we can responsibly take. Teach us to work together, share burdens, and welcome the gifts of others. As your disciples, we want to be known by our love.

Take a few moments to pray for one need in your church, neighborhood, or family.

Father, give us a way to respond faithfully to the needs around us. Amen.

Closing Reflection and Prayer

Consider this question: What good can I do today, and when will I do it?

Father, thank you that you care about every aspect of our lives — our plans, our use of time, the posture of our hearts, and the way we respond to others.

Help us carry today’s passage with us. When pride rises, lead us toward humility. When the next good step is clear, help us take it. Protect us from making promises in prayer that we never carry into the day. Give us steady follow-through, even when the action seems small.

Thank You for Your patience as we grow. May our trust in You become visible through lives of humble, attentive love. We place this day and its opportunities in Your hands.

We pray all of this today in Jesus’ name, amen.
