Monday - The Letter of James (James 4:10-12)

Oct 19, 2026

Welcome to Daily Prayer

We're in our ninth week with the letter of James, and this week we're focusing on the call of believers away from judgment and slander, away from the illusion that we're in control, and toward a life shaped by humility.

As we begin our prayer now, let's quiet our hearts and minds before the Lord.

Opening Prayer

"Lord God, Almighty and Everlasting Father, You have brought us in safety to this day. Preserve us with your mighty power; that we might not fall into sin; nor be overcome by adversity: And in all we do, direct us to the fulfilling of your purpose through Jesus Christ, our Lord."

Father, we surrender everything to you. We ask that you would restore us and renew us. We humble ourselves before you. Inspire us to see and act on the wisdom of your Word.

A Scripture Reading from James 4:10–12:

"Humble yourselves before the Lord and he will lift you up. Brothers and sisters, do not slander one another. Anyone who speaks against a brother or sister or judges them speaks against the law and judges it. When you judge the law, you are not keeping it, but sitting in judgment on it. There is only one lawgiver and judge, the one who is able to save and destroy. But you, who are you to judge your neighbor?"

Prayer of Adoration

Lord, I thank you that I don't have to make a place for myself because you've already gone before me and made a way. I rejoice in the good news of the gospel.

Lord Jesus, you gave yourself for me. You poured out your mercy on me. You carried my sin and shame and covered me with your righteousness.

Lord, you have not treated me as my sins deserve. You've invited me to draw near. You have honored me in ways that I do not deserve. And for that, I adore you.

Prayer of Confession

Lord, we repent of our judgment of other believers. We repent of using our words to tear down and bring division and distrust. We have allowed a fault-finding spirit to dwell among us that looks down on others, seeking to make ourselves look and feel better.

We acknowledge our fear, our envy, and pride that have been exposed through our words. We have allowed our jealousy and pride to lead us astray and bring dishonor to your Name.

Lord, we confess that we've sought to bring others down and to outdo each other instead of outdoing each other in showing honor.

Lord, you tell us to humble ourselves and you'll lift us up. But instead, we've sought to tear others down and lift ourselves up. We have done wrong and have failed to do what is right. We have not loved our neighbors as ourselves.

Father, forgive us for speaking against, for judging, and gossiping and slandering other believers. Instead of praying and serving and carrying burdens for each other, we've judged and discriminated and become judges with evil thoughts.

We repent of all the judgments we've made, of acting as if we know all things-as if we know the thoughts and intentions of the hearts of all those that we've judged. We acknowledge we do not have the authority to make those judgments. We confess them as sin, we repent, and we turn to you as the true Judge and the Savior. We trust your judgment.

Lord, have mercy and renew a right spirit within us.

Prayer of Intercession

Lord, let there be light in all the places where we've spoken evil, where we've spoken against or gossiped. Let your grace and truth shine. Let there be hope and healing.

We want to join with Paul in saying we no longer regard anyone from a merely human point of view. Help us to see things through the reality of the new creation through Christ, through the lens of liberty and mercy, through the invitation to love and life.

Lord, teach us to be so grounded in your mercy and grace that we overflow with mercy to others. We acknowledge that all authority belongs to you. We trust that you'll always do what's right.

Lord, empower us to reflect your goodness and mercy all the days of our lives.

Moment of Reflection

Lord, is there any person I've torn down or spoken against where I need to go and make things right?

As we listen to the passage again, let's listen with a heart toward humility and grace.

Humble yourselves before the Lord, and he will lift you up. Brothers and sisters, do not slander one another. Anyone who speaks against a brother or sister or judges them speaks against the law and judges it. When you judge the law, you are not keeping it, but sitting in judgment on it. There is only one lawgiver and judge, the one who is able to save and destroy. But you, who are you to judge your neighbor?

Weekly Memory Verse

James 4:17

If anyone then knows the good they ought to do and doesn't do it, it is sin for them.

Closing Prayer

Father, may the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart be pleasing to you. Help me to be quick to listen, slow to speak, and eager to build others up.

Lord, may the people I encounter today experience your grace through me. In the name of Jesus, amen.
