Tuesday - The Letter of James (James 4:11)

Oct 20, 2026

Welcome to Daily Prayer.

Today’s focus is James 4:11.

“Brothers and sisters, do not slander one another.”

Specifically today, we’re looking at some of the ways Jesus responded to slander and asking Him to shape our own responses when words wound us.

As we begin, let us prepare our hearts and minds before the Lord.

Search me, God, and know my heart. Test me and know my anxious thoughts. See if there is any offensive way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting.

Opening

Criticism is a part of life, especially for those in leadership. Michelle and I learned early on that ministry requires a love for people who will sometimes reject it. Today we invite you to pray with us as we model our prayers after some of the Lord’s responses to slander.

He Sometimes Remained Silent

Sometimes He remained silent. When Jesus stood wrongly accused before Pilate, Pilate was shocked at His ability to stay silent in such a serious moment.

Father, when I am misunderstood or spoken against, help me pause and turn to You. Give me wisdom to know when to be quick to listen and slow to speak, or even to remain silent.

First, allow me to consider anything truthful that I need to hear. I surrender my need to answer every accusation. I don’t have to have the final word.

You know my heart, and I can trust You with what others may think of me.

Jesus, teach me the quiet strength You showed before Your accusers. Let my silence come from trust in the Father. Search my heart and release me from resentment, bitterness, or any desire to punish others by withholding my words.

When speaking is necessary, guide what I say. But when silence is the better choice, give me peace to rest in that. In Jesus’ name, amen.

He Continued Serving

There are other times when critics portrayed Him as a glutton, a drunkard, and a friend of sinners. Yet He continued to minister to the outcast and sinners.

Father, when criticism discourages me, help me remain faithful to the good You have called me to do. Keep my heart steady when others misunderstand my actions or question my motives.

Jesus, You continued to welcome and love people even when others criticized You. Give me courage to follow Your example—to make room for those who are overlooked, to serve those who are dismissed, and to love those who need a friend.

I bring You the weariness of feeling misunderstood. Renew my compassion when I am tempted to withdraw. Keep disappointment from hardening my heart toward the people You have called me to serve.

Search my motives, Lord. Let my good works flow from love for You and others. Free me from the need to prove myself, and help me find joy in being faithful to You. In Jesus’ name, amen.

He Responded with Wisdom

Religious leaders frequently tried to lure Jesus into a trap, but Jesus would at times masterfully respond with wisdom that exposed their true intentions.

They were certain they had cornered Jesus when they placed the woman caught in adultery at His feet and demanded He condemn her. But in just a few words, He exposed their sinful motives and set her free from condemnation.

Father, when a conversation becomes accusatory, help me pause before I respond. Quiet my defensiveness and give me patience to seek Your wisdom.

Give me humility to examine my own heart before judging someone else. Show me where pride or anger or assumptions are shaping my response, and help me receive Your correction.

Jesus, give me discernment to recognize when a question is meant to trap or provoke. Keep me from being drawn into arguments that cause harm. Guide me toward words that are truthful, gracious, and wise.

Give me courage to resist public shaming, even when joining the crowd would be easier. Help me see the person who is being accused and remember their dignity. Fill me with Your compassion and show me how to offer mercy while remaining faithful to truth. In Jesus’ name, amen.

A Moment of Reflection

Father, I pause before You and invite You to search my heart. Whose words am I still carrying? Help me bring You the hurt, release my grip on it, and trust You with what remains unresolved. Show me where my own words have wounded someone through gossip or careless speech. Give me humility to acknowledge the harm I have caused and courage to make it right.

Jesus, which of Your responses do I need today? Teach me when to be silent, when to continue doing good, when to speak with wisdom, and how to pray for those who hurt me.

As I grow quiet, help me recognize one faithful next step. Whether it is an apology, correcting something untrue, showing kindness, or refusing to repeat a story, give me grace to follow through. In Jesus’ name, amen.

Memory Verse

Our memory verse this week:

James 4:17

“If anyone, then, knows the good they ought to do and doesn’t do it, it is sin for them.”

Closing Prayer

Jesus, thank You for showing me how to face accusations with trust and wisdom and love. When I feel misunderstood, help me follow Your example and rest in Your care.

I give You my wounded heart and strained relationships. I give You all the unresolved accusations. You know what has happened and what is needed.

I ask You to heal what is hurting and to reveal truth. Guide me toward peace. Guide me to the way that is everlasting.

Holy Spirit, guard my mouth throughout this day. Help me pause before reacting and choose words that reflect Your kindness.

Give me wisdom to know when to speak, courage to speak truth with love, and peace when I just need to be silent.

May my words bless the people I encounter, and may the way I respond, especially when it is difficult, point others to You. In Jesus’ name, amen.
