Monday - Pray Like This
Welcome to Daily Prayer. This week, we are focusing on one important plea from the Lord’s
Prayer: “Forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors.” Today, we begin by
remembering that sin is more than a mistake or weakness. It is a debt before a holy God—a
debt we could never repay. Yet through Jesus, forgiveness has been purchased and freely
offered to us.
Word of Encouragement
When Jesus taught us to pray, “Forgive us our debts,” he reminded us that we come to God
as people who are completely dependent upon his mercy. We cannot erase our guilt through
good behavior. We cannot compensate for our sin with religious activity. Forgiveness is not
something we achieve; it is something Jesus purchased. That purchase came at a brutal and
unimaginable cost. Jesus alone could pay it because Jesus alone was completely righteous.
At the cross, he carried our sin, endured our judgment, and shed his blood so our debt could
be canceled. Because of Christ, we do not have to hide from God. We can confess our sins
honestly and approach him confidently. The debt has been paid, the way has been opened,
and grace is available to us today.
Prayer of Reflection
Father, I come before you acknowledging my complete dependence upon your mercy.
My sin is not merely a collection of small mistakes. Every act of disobedience is an offense
against your holiness. Every selfish choice, dishonest word, impure thought, and prideful
attitude has created a debt that I could never repay. Forgive me for the times I have
minimized my sin, excused my behavior, or compared myself to others. Forgive me for trying
to appear righteous instead of honestly confessing my need for grace. Search my heart and
reveal anything I have attempted to hide. Show me any attitude, habit, relationship, or private
decision that is displeasing to you. I do not want to defend my sin. I do not want to rename
it, justify it, or blame someone else for it. I confess that I have sinned against you.
Thank you that I do not have to run from your presence. Because of Jesus, I can bring my
guilt into the light. I receive the cleansing and forgiveness that only you can provide.
Prayer of Praise
Jesus, I praise you because you paid a debt that I could never pay. You willingly entered my
brokenness. You carried my guilt, bore my shame, and accepted the judgment my sin
deserved. You were mocked, beaten, rejected, pierced, and crucified so I could be forgiven. I
praise you because your sacrifice was complete. Nothing needs to be added to your finished
work. My good deeds cannot improve it, and my failures cannot diminish its power. Your
blood is sufficient. Your grace is greater than my sin. Your mercy reaches deeper than myworst failure. I praise you because the cross reveals both the seriousness of my sin and the
greatness of your love. You did not overlook my debt. You paid it in full. Thank you for
removing my condemnation, washing away my guilt, and bringing me into the family of God.
Thank you that I can stand before the Father clothed in your righteousness. All honor, glory,
and praise belong to you, my crucified and risen Savior.
Prayer of Surrender
Father, I surrender every attempt to earn the forgiveness you have already provided.
I lay down the exhausting effort to prove that I am good enough. I surrender the belief that I
must punish myself before I can receive your mercy. I release the shame that tells me my
failure is greater than the blood of Jesus. Teach me to agree with you about my sin without
continuing to carry guilt that Christ has already carried for me. I surrender my pride and self-
righteousness. Keep me from looking down on others or forgetting how much I have been
forgiven. Help me live today as someone who has been cleansed, restored, and made new.
Let gratitude for the cross shape my words, decisions, relationships, and reactions. I give
you every sin I have confessed and every burden of guilt I have carried. I trust the finished
work of Jesus. Let my confidence rest not in my performance, but in your mercy. Let my
identity be rooted not in what I have done, but in what Christ has done for me.
Closing Prayer
During these last few moments, thank Jesus personally for one specific sin, failure, or season
of your life that he has forgiven. Rest in the truth that you do not have to repay a debt that
Jesus has already paid in full. Receive it fully today and give him all the glory for your
forgiveness.
