Tuesday - Pray Like This
Welcome to Daily Prayer. Today, we continue an 8 week journey through The Lord’s
prayer together. This week we are meditating on the phrase, “Your will be done on earth as it is
in heaven.” This is a powerful line to pray and one that takes our whole lives to fully grasp.
Today, we will focus on the prayer of Jesus in the Garden of Gethsemane before His death.
Here, we find the ultimate prayer of submission to the will of His Father.
PAUSE: Before we begin, let’s take a moment to center our hearts, minds and bodies on
Christ. Take a few slow, deep breaths.
Jesus, I love you. You are my deepest and truest friend. Thank you for always being here. I lay
aside the distractions running around in my mind right now. I put away the mental to do list and
for these next few moments, I choose the best thing— to sit at Your feet.
SCRIPTURE: A Scripture reading from Matthew 26:36-39
36 Then Jesus went with them to the olive grove called Gethsemane, and he said, “Sit here while I go over there to pray.” 37 He took Peter and Zebedee’s two sons, James and John, and he became anguished and distressed. 38 He told them, “My soul is crushed with grief to the point of death. Stay here and keep watch with me.”
39 He went on a little farther and bowed with his face to the ground, praying, “My Father! If it is possible, let this cup of suffering be taken away from me. Yet I want your will to be done, not mine.”
RESPOND/REJOICE:
Jesus, you are beautiful. Your selfless death has given us life.
You are the Savior of the world and the lover of my soul.
You chose pain and sorrow over Your own desires.
Lord, we cannot fathom grief to the point You experienced on the Cross, but you endured that pain for the joy set before You of completing the Father’s will.
You are our ultimate example. You are the One I want to follow even unto death. We want to understand more of
Your suffering, bring us into the Garden with You.
ACKNOWLEDGE OUR NEED/ASK FOR HELP:
Help those Lord in our body and around the world who find themselves right now in the “fires of sorrow”, as you were in the garden…Lonely, rejected, out of emotional strength, weary, lost, burdened, deeply sorrowful, broken
hearted, full of grief…..
Give them strength to say yes to your will. Help them to trust that out of their grief, You will
make them nourishment for other people. May they feel your tangible presence as they say yes
to your will. We ask you Jesus to lift our eyes up right now. To see the picture of you walking
toward the cross and trust that as we walk to whatever “death” we are facing right now, You
went before us. You walk this journey with us. Strengthen us by Your presence. Give us the joy
of being with You even in pain.
SCRIPTURE AGAIN: As we listen to the passage again, focus in on a word or phrase the Holy
Spirit might be highlighting to your heart today.
YIELD and SAY YES:
Lord, help me to mean this. Not my will, but Yours be done. I yield to Your will today. I give into
Your plan and release the tight grip I have on mine. Even if it means shattered dreams,
Lord, I say yes to Your will.
Help me to say yes to You when I cannot see the full picture. When all I see and feel is sorrow,
give me grace to believe— through the tears—that Your will is worth saying YES to.
Make me like You Jesus. Your will is the best choice for my life.
As we end our time together, let’s join in with the saints that came before us and the body of
Christ around the world today by praying the Lord’s Prayer.
*LORD’S PRAYER*
Our Father in heaven,
hallowed be your name.
Your kingdom come, your will be done on earth as it is in heaven
Give us this day our daily bread.
And forgive us our sins as we forgive those who sin against us
lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil
for yours is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory for ever. Amen.
