Monday - Pray Like This
Welcome to Daily Prayer. This week, we are continuing an 8 week journey through the
Lord’s Prayer. This is the model Jesus gave to us when the disciples asked him how to pray
and this is what He lived out as He walked the earth. This week, we are meditating on the
phrase, “Your will be done on earth as it is in heaven.” Lord, help us to mean this as we pray it
this week. Today we will focus on seeing that from beginning to end, Jesus’ ministry was
centered on yielding to the will of the Father. We will ask Him to make His will the center of our
lives.
PAUSE: Before we begin, let’s pause. In Him, we live and move and have our being. Holy Spirit
help us to pray
SCRIPTURE: A Scripture reading from John 4:31-34
31In the meantime the disciples kept urging him, “Rabbi, eat something.”
32But he said, “I have food to eat that you don’t know about.”
33The disciples said to one another, “Could someone have brought him something to eat? ”
34 “My food is to do the will of him who sent me and to finish his work,”
Jesus had this dialogue with His disciples at the beginning of His earthly ministry. In one of the
first interactions of revealing Himself to people, he chooses an unlikely candidate, a foreign
woman. His disciples are confused. This isn’t the plan they had in mind. Jesus responds with
this phrase, telling them that His nourishment, His sustenance, His plan comes from the will of
His Father. From beginning to end, He reminded them of this. It was all about doing God’s will,
not what seemed best from an earthly perspective.
RESPOND/REJOICE: “For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are My ways higher
than your ways..” Father, we now bow in silence, and simply acknowledge Your ways. Your Will
is good and perfect.
Jesus we love you. From the beginning to the end, your life was centered on the Father’s will-
doing only what you saw the Father doing. As you breathed Your last breath from the cross,
You could truly say “It is finished”.
ACKNOWLEDGE OUR NEED/ASK FOR HELP:
Oh Holy Spirit create in me a hunger for the will of God. Would we truly begin to be satisfied in seeking and doing Your will over the things of this world. From the small, mundane moments to the big events and decisions, may Your will be done in our world as it is in heaven.
Let’s listen to the words of Jesus again…
31In the meantime the disciples kept urging him, “Rabbi, eat something.”
32But he said, “I have food to eat that you don’t know about.”
33The disciples said to one another, “Could someone have brought him something to eat? ”
34 “My food is to do the will of him who sent me and to finish his work,”
YIELD and SAY YES:
Lord, we yield to You. Right now we acknowledge Your presence with us and in us. Help us
today Holy Spirit in what may feel like just another day to say yes to your holy and ordinary
nudges.
As we end our time together, let’s join in with the saints that came before us and the body of
Christ around the world today by praying the Lord’s Prayer…
*LORD’S PRAYER*
Our Father in heaven,
hallowed be your name.
Your kingdom come, your will be done on earth as it is in heaven
Give us this day our daily bread.
And forgive us our sins as we forgive those who sin against us
lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil
for yours is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory for ever. Amen.
