Monday - Pray Like This
Welcome to Daily Prayer. We are continuing our eight week journey with the Lord's Prayer called Pray Like This. This week we focus on the petition, "hallowed be your name." That God would cause his name to be recognized as holy. That he would reveal himself. Today we reflect on God’s self-description to Moses. This description of God’s character is the most quoted and alluded to passage in the Bible (i.e. the Bible quotes from and refers back to Exodus 34:5-8 more than any other biblical passage).
As we begin our prayer now, let’s quiet our hearts and minds before the LORD.
LORD, you are good. You are worthy of my worship.
I release all my worries and all my cares to you today.
I give everyone and everything to you.
O LORD, open my lips, and my mouth will declare your praise.
A Scripture Reading from Exodus 34:5-8:
"Then the Lord came down in the cloud and stood there with him and proclaimed his name, Yahweh.
And he passed in front of Moses, proclaiming, “Yahweh, Yahweh, the compassionate and gracious God, slow to anger, abounding in love and faithfulness, maintaining love to thousands, and forgiving wickedness, rebellion and sin.
Yet he does not leave the guilty unpunished; he punishes the children and their children for the sin of the parents to the third and fourth generation.”
Moses bowed to the ground at once and worshiped."
A Prayer of Adoration:
LORD, in this moment with Moses you revealed your glory and your name. Your glory shines forth in the display of your character. LORD, I worship you as the compassionate and gracious God. Where would we be without your compassion and grace?
You abound in love and faithfulness. The consequences of evil go on for several generations but love goes on for thousands. I adore you for your incredible goodness.
A Prayer of Confession:
Lord, forgive me for taking for granted your kindness and grace, for living as if your mercy were something I could earn or ignore, instead of trusting and rejoicing in it every day. I am prone to wander Lord.
Forgive me for misrepresenting you with my words and attitudes. Cleanse the thoughts of my heart so that I would love and adore you.
A Prayer of Trust:
LORD, I choose to believe you are who you say you are. I reject my fears and the lies of this culture. I put my faith in you and run into your name. I rest in your steadfast love and faithfulness.
A Prayer of Intercession:
LORD, be merciful to those who are weary and crushed by shame.
Be gracious to those trapped in sin and afraid to return. Give them grace to turn.
May we experience repentance and renewal.
Pass before us again. Reveal yourself to this generation that we may know you. We want to join the cry of your people: The LORD, he is God. The LORD, he is God. You are good and your mercy endures forever.
A Moment of Reflection:
LORD, which part of your character in this passage do I most need to trust and experience right now?
Lord, I trust in you.
Exodus 34:5-8:
"Then the Lord came down in the cloud and stood there with him and proclaimed his name, Yahweh.
And he passed in front of Moses, proclaiming, “Yahweh, Yahweh, the compassionate and gracious God, slow to anger, abounding in love and faithfulness, maintaining love to thousands, and forgiving wickedness, rebellion and sin.
Yet he does not leave the guilty unpunished; he punishes the children and their children for the sin of the parents to the third and fourth generation.”
Moses bowed to the ground at once and worshiped."
A Closing Prayer:
Yahweh, I worship you. May your glorious character shape how I think, how I pray, how I treat others. May your goodness compel me today for your name sake.
As we finish, let's pray the Lord's Prayer together:
“‘Our Father in heaven,
hallowed be your name,
your kingdom come,
your will be done,
on earth as it is in heaven.
Give us today our daily bread.
And forgive us our debts,
as we also have forgiven our debtors.
And lead us not into temptation,
but deliver us from evil.
For yours is the kingdom and the power and the glory, forever. Amen
