Friday - The Gospel According To Mark
Welcome to Daily Prayer. This is week 9 of an 11-week journey through Mark’s account of the gospel of Jesus Christ. As we begin our time together, let’s quiet our hearts and minds before the Lord.
A Scripture Reading from Mark 10:32-45
32 And they were on the road, going up to Jerusalem, and Jesus was walking ahead of them. And they were amazed, and those who followed were afraid. And taking the twelve again, he began to tell them what was to happen to him, 33 saying, “See, we are going up to Jerusalem, and the Son of Man will be delivered over to the chief priests and the scribes, and they will condemn him to death and deliver him over to the Gentiles. 34 And they will mock him and spit on him, and flog him and kill him. And after three days he will rise.” 35 And James and John, the sons of Zebedee, came up to him and said to him, “Teacher, we want you to do for us whatever we ask of you.” 36 And he said to them, “What do you want me to do for you?” 37 And they said to him, “Grant us to sit, one at your right hand and one at your left, in your glory.” 38 Jesus said to them, “You do not know what you are asking. Are you able to drink the cup that I drink, or to be baptized with the baptism with which I am baptized?” 39 And they said to him, “We are able.” And Jesus said to them, “The cup that I drink you will drink, and with the baptism with which I am baptized, you will be baptized, 40 but to sit at my right hand or at my left is not mine to grant, but it is for those for whom it has been prepared.” 41 And when the ten heard it, they began to be indignant at James and John. 42 And Jesus called them to him and said to them, “You know that those who are considered rulers of the Gentiles lord it over them, and their great ones exercise authority over them. 43 But it shall not be so among you. But whoever would be great among you must be your servant, 44 and whoever would be first among you must be slave of all. 45 For even the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.”
A Prayer of Adoration
Jesus, we adore You as the One who walked knowingly toward suffering for our sake. You were not surprised by the cross—you predicted it, embraced it, and endured it out of love. While others sought glory, You chose sacrifice. While others pursued status, You took the form of a servant. You are the true definition of greatness—not in power over others, but in laying down Your life for them. We praise You as the Son of Man who came not to be served, but to serve, and to give Your life as a ransom for many. You are worthy of all honor, not because You demanded it, but because You humbled Yourself to the point of death.
A Prayer of Confession
Jesus, we confess how often we are like James and John, seeking positions of honor without understanding the cost. We want the crown, but not the cross. We want recognition, but not sacrifice. We desire influence, but resist surrender. We confess our tendency to measure greatness by status, visibility, and control. We admit that we often compare ourselves to others, striving to be seen, to be valued, to be important in ways that mirror the world rather than Your kingdom. Forgive us for pursuing greatness on our own terms. Forgive us for overlooking the path of humility and service that You clearly laid before us.
A Prayer of Trust
Jesus, we choose to trust that Your way is better than ours. We trust that true greatness is found not in being served, but in serving. We trust that the path You walked—the path of humility, sacrifice, and obedience—is the path that leads to life. Even when it feels costly, even when it goes against our instincts, we trust that following You in servanthood is not loss, but gain. Teach us to embrace the cup You call us to drink, whatever that may look like in our lives. Shape our hearts to desire what You desire, and to find joy in living for others instead of ourselves.
A Prayer of Intercession
Jesus, we lift up leaders in Your church and in our communities. Guard them from pride, from self-promotion, and from the temptation to lead for recognition rather than service. Raise up leaders who reflect Your heart—leaders who are humble, sacrificial, and committed to serving others. We pray for all of us who follow You, that we would reject the patterns of this world and embrace the way of Your kingdom. Help us to serve in our homes, in our workplaces, and in our communities with love and humility. Let our lives reflect a different kind of greatness—one that points people not to ourselves, but to You.
Read Again
As we read some of the passage again, let’s listen for a word or a phrase that the Holy Spirit
might want to say to us from today’s verses.
35 And James and John, the sons of Zebedee, came up to him and said to him, “Teacher, we want you to do for us whatever we ask of you.” 36 And he said to them, “What do you want me to do for you?” 37 And they said to him, “Grant us to sit, one at your right hand and one at your left, in your glory.” 38 Jesus said to them, “You do not know what you are asking.
A Moment of Reflection
Jesus, I pause and consider what greatness looks like in my own heart. Where am I seeking recognition instead of serving? Where am I avoiding sacrifice? Where am I wanting the benefits of following You without embracing the cost? Show me what it looks like for me to serve in the places You’ve put me. Give me a heart that is willing to go low, to love others well, and to follow You not just in words, but in the way I live.
A Weekly Verse to Memorize:
Mark 10:15
“Truly, I say to you, whoever does not receive the kingdom of God like a child shall not enter it.”
Closing Prayer
During these last few moments, ask Jesus, “Where have I been allowing or expecting myself to be served, when in fact You would have me change my role to the one who serves?” Sit with Him—and let Him reshape your view of greatness.
