Thursday - The Gospel According To Mark

Mar 5, 2026

Welcome to Daily Prayer. This is week 6 of an 11-week journey through Mark’s account of the gospel of Jesus Christ. As we begin our time together, let’s quiet our hearts and minds before the Lord.

A Scripture Reading from Mark 5:35-40

35 While Jesus was still speaking, some people came from the house of Jairus, the synagogue leader. “Your daughter is dead,” they said. “Why bother the teacher anymore?” 36 Overhearing what they said, Jesus told him, “Don’t be afraid; just believe.” 37 He did not let anyone follow him except Peter, James and John the brother of James. 38 When they came to the home of the synagogue leader, Jesus saw a commotion, with people crying and wailing loudly. 39 He went in and said to them, “Why all this commotion and wailing? The child is not dead but asleep.” 40 But they laughed at him.

A Prayer of Adoration

Jesus, we adore You as the One who is not intimidated by bad news. You are not rushed by urgency, and You are not shaken by final diagnoses. When others say, “It’s over,” You say, “Do not be afraid.” When hope seems gone, You speak faith into the silence. We worship You as Lord over life and death, over what feels irreversible, over what we’ve already grieved as lost. You are steady in the storm of our emotions. You are calm when everything feels out of control. You are present when the room is full of grief and noise. We praise You as the One who steps into impossible moments with authority, compassion, and hope.

A Prayer of Confession

Jesus, we confess how quickly fear takes over our hearts. We confess how easily we believe the worst report. We confess how loud the voices of doubt can become in our minds. We let circumstances define what is possible. We let grief speak louder than Your promises. We let final words from others shape our expectations. We confess that sometimes we stop walking with You when hope feels delayed. We assume it’s too late. Forgive us for shrinking our faith to match our circumstances. Forgive us for letting fear have the final word. Teach us to listen to Your voice above every other voice.

A Prayer of Trust

Jesus, we choose to trust You in the moments that feel like the end of the story. We trust You when the news is devastating. We trust You when we don’t understand Your timing. You told Jairus not to be afraid, but to believe — not because the situation was easy, but because You were present. We place our trust not in outcomes we can control, but in Your character. We trust that You are still good when things feel lost. We trust that You are still powerful when hope feels fragile. Teach us to keep walking with You even when the crowd says to stop hoping. We trust You to lead us into rooms we’re afraid to enter.

A Prayer of Intercession

Jesus, we lift up those who have just received heartbreaking news — a diagnosis, a loss, a phone call they never wanted to get. We pray for those standing in rooms of grief, surrounded by tears, noise, and well-meaning voices that are heavy with despair. Be near to parents who feel helpless.

Be near to families waiting on outcomes they cannot control. Be near to those who feel like hope has slipped through their fingers. Speak Your words over them: “Do not be afraid. Only believe.” Not as pressure, but as presence. Walk with them into what feels unbearable. Quiet the voices of fear. Strengthen hearts that are barely holding on. Let Your peace enter rooms filled with sorrow.

Read Again

As we read the passage again, let’s listen for a word or a phrase that the Holy Spirit might want to say to us from today’s verses.

A Moment of Reflection

Jesus, we pause and reflect on the places in our lives where hope feels threatened. What situation have we already labeled as “too late”? What problem do I feel is beyond Your reach? We bring those moments into Your presence now. We choose to listen for Your voice above the noise. We choose to hold space for faith even when fear feels loud. Meet us in the rooms we’ve been avoiding. We choose not to be afraid today. We choose to believe.

A Weekly Verse to Memorize

Closing Prayer

During these last few moments, ask the Lord to reveal any and all areas of your life that fear has weakened your faith. As thoughts come to mind, take time to declare, “Lord, You are more than enough for that!” I encourage you to even speak it out loud. Declare this over your family, your work, your health…all the areas that are heavy on your heart today.
