Monday - The Gospel According To Mark
Welcome to Daily Prayer. This is week 9 of an 11-week journey through Mark’s account of the gospel of Jesus Christ. As we begin our time together, let’s quiet our hearts and minds before the Lord.
A Scripture Reading from Mark 9:30-37
30 They went on from there and passed through Galilee. And he did not want anyone to know, 31 for he was teaching his disciples, saying to them, “The Son of Man is going to be delivered into the hands of men, and they will kill him. And when he is killed, after three days he will rise.” 32 But they did not understand the saying, and were afraid to ask him. 33 And they came to Capernaum. And when he was in the house he asked them, “What were you discussing on the way?” 34 But they kept silent, for on the way they had argued with one another about who was the greatest. 35 And he sat down and called the twelve. And he said to them, “If anyone would be first, he must be last of all and servant of all.” 36 And he took a child and put him in the midst of them, and taking him in his arms, he said to them, 37 “Whoever receives one such child in my name receives me, and whoever receives me, receives not me but him who sent me.”
A Prayer of Adoration
Jesus, we adore You as the King who redefines what greatness looks like. You are the Son of God, yet You chose the path of humility. You spoke of suffering, surrender, and sacrifice while Your followers argued about status. We praise You that Your kingdom is not built on power as the world sees it, but on servanthood, humility, and love. You welcome the lowly. You honor the overlooked. You lift up the child, and You say this is what greatness looks like. You are not impressed by position. You are not drawn to pride. You are near to the humble and present with those who serve quietly. We worship You as the Servant King, who calls us not to climb higher, but to kneel lower.
A Prayer of Confession
Jesus, we confess how easily we slip into the disciples’ mindset. We compare. We compete. We measure our worth by recognition and influence. We want to be seen. We want to be first. We want to matter in ways that are visible and affirmed. We confess the pride that hides in our hearts — the need to be noticed, the desire to be important, the resistance to serving in hidden ways. We confess that childlike humility does not come naturally to us. We prefer independence over dependence. Control over trust. Forgive us for chasing greatness on the
world’s terms. Forgive us for overlooking the small, quiet acts of love that matter deeply to You.
A Prayer of Trust
Jesus, we choose to trust Your definition of greatness. We trust that nothing done in humility is wasted. We trust that serving others, even when unseen, matters deeply in Your kingdom. We trust that becoming like a child — dependent, trusting, open — is not weakness, but strength in Your eyes. Teach us to let go of striving for position. Teach us to rest in being known by You instead of needing recognition from others. We trust that when we lower ourselves, You are at work in ways we cannot see. We trust that Your path leads to life, even when it feels countercultural. Shape our hearts to trust Your way over our instincts.
A Prayer of Intercession
Jesus, we pray for Your church to reflect Your heart of humility and service. We pray for leaders to lead with gentleness, not ego. For influence to be marked by love, not self-promotion. We pray for communities to be free from comparison and competition. Replace jealousy with celebration. Replace rivalry with unity. We lift up those who feel overlooked, unseen, or unimportant. Remind them that You see every act of service, every quiet sacrifice, every hidden act of love. Help us become people who welcome others well — especially the overlooked, the small, the vulnerable — just as You welcomed the child. Form in us hearts that reflect Yours.
Read Again
As we read some of the passage again, let’s listen for a word or a phrase that the Holy Spirit might want to say to us from today’s verses.
A Moment of Reflection
Jesus, I pause and look at my own heart. Where am I seeking recognition instead of serving quietly? Where am I comparing myself to others? Where am I resisting humility? Teach me to become like a child — to trust You more fully, to depend on You more deeply, to let go of my
need to be seen. Show me where You are inviting me to serve, even if no one else notices. I want to follow You in humility, not just in words, but in the way I live.
A Weekly Verse to Memorize
Closing Prayer
During these last few moments, ask the Lord two questions:
“Where are You calling me to serve with humility right now?” And, “What would it look like for me to trust You like a child today?” Sit with Him — and let Him shape your heart.
