Friday - The Letter of James (Isaiah 55:6-11)

Sep 4, 2026

Welcome to Daily Prayer. James says in James 1:18, "Of his own will he brought us forth by the word of truth, that we should be a kind of firstfruits of his creatures." Today we reflect on the desires, thoughts, and nature of God and the life-giving word of God from Isaiah 55.

As we begin our time together, let's take a few deep breaths and open our hearts to the Lord.

Father, we thank you today for your goodness. Keep us tender and receptive to your voice. Inspire us to see and act on the wisdom of your Word.

A Scripture reading from Isaiah 55:6-11:

"Seek the Lord while he may be found;

call on him while he is near.

Let the wicked forsake their ways

    and the unrighteous their thoughts.

Let them turn to the Lord, and he will have mercy on them,

and to our God, for he will freely pardon.

“For my thoughts are not your thoughts,

neither are your ways my ways,”

declares the Lord.

“As the heavens are higher than the earth,

so are my ways higher than your ways

and my thoughts than your thoughts.

10

As the rain and the snow

    come down from heaven,

and do not return to it

    without watering the earth

and making it bud and flourish,

so that it yields seed for the sower and bread for the eater,

11

so is my word that goes out from my mouth:

It will not return to me empty,

but will accomplish what I desire

and achieve the purpose for which I sent it."

A Prayer of Adoration:

Lord, you have made yourself findable. You are higher than the heavens, but you have come near. You have invited us to come to the waters and drink, to listen to you and freely eat what is best, to come to you and live.

Father, I worship you for your unchanging goodness. We delight in your mercy and grace. Your ways are higher than our ways. Your thoughts are higher, better, greater than our thoughts. You have sent forth your Living Word to save us and to accomplish your will. We receive and rejoice in the gospel. You have caused us to be born again through your living and enduring Word, and we praise you.

A Prayer of Confession:

Lord, you ask us why we're spending our money and laboring for what cannot satisfy. Forgive us for allowing ourselves to be deceived by promises from this world and then doubting what you have promised. We have lied and deceived ourselves. We have questioned your goodness, and we've questioned your ways instead of feasting on your promises. We do not know you as you are.

Forgive us for our foolishness and misplaced pursuits. We repent for not seeking you, and then blaming you for our lack and difficulty. We have not understood the power and promise of your word.

Today we make the good confession: The gospel is true. The Lord Jesus is the living word from the Father, and we receive and trust and embrace him as our life. I am a new creation in Christ, and I was made to grow and become like Christ.

A Prayer of Intercession:

Father, may your desires come to pass in us today. Cause your rain to fall in our community. Cause your seed to take root and grow in us. Keep deception far from us. Lord, expose our blind spots and deliver us from our willful ways. Open ears to many in our community to hear your invitation. Return to the Lord, and he will have mercy.

Memory Verse

James 1:12

"Blessed is the one who perseveres under trial, because having stood the test, that person will receive the crown of life that the Lord has promised to those who love him."

A Closing Prayer:

Lord, we receive today as an opportunity to seek you and draw near to you. We say yes to you. Cause your life-giving Word to do all that you want to do in me and through me. May there be a hundredfold harvest among us. In the name of Jesus,

Amen.
