Thursday - The Letter of James (Psalm 84:10-12)

Welcome to Daily Prayer.

This week we've been reflecting on the dead-end road of temptation, and the warning against being deceived about the goodness of God. Today we reflect on Psalm 84 and rejoice in God's generosity.

As we begin our prayer now, let's quiet our hearts and minds before the Lord.

Lord, there's no one like you. We fix our eyes on you. We lift our hearts to you. We set our minds on you. Lord, we belong to you. And we give everyone and everything to you. We humble ourselves before you, Lord.

Inspire us to see and act on the wisdom of your Word.

A Scripture Reading from Psalm 84:10–12:

"Better is one day in your courts than a thousand elsewhere; I would rather be a doorkeeper in the house of my God than dwell in the tents of the wicked. For the Lord God is a sun and shield; the Lord bestows favor and honor; no good thing does he withhold from those whose walk is blameless. Lord Almighty, blessed is the one who trusts in you."

A Prayer of Adoration:

Lord Almighty, those who know you best declare that nothing is better than you. Better is one day in your courts than a thousand anywhere else. It is an honor to be near to you. We declare today you are my light and my salvation, my sun and my shield. We rejoice in your goodness, Lord. You bless those who take refuge in you. You are generous to those who come to you and trust in you, and we praise your holy name.

A Prayer of Confession and Trust:

Lord, your Word warns us not to be deceived about your character. You are good. We don't want to listen to the voices of this world, our competing desires, or the enemy. Forgive us for trying to build our own kingdoms and find life apart from you. You tell us not to expect to receive anything if there's an unwillingness to believe you or do what you say.

Oh God, you've provided everything good for us to enjoy, but then we've forgotten you and questioned your character. We've resisted your will. Forgive us for being double-minded. Forgive us for our half-hearted requests and allowing ourselves to be blown and tossed by the wind.

Father, those who've drawn near to you have become captured by your beauty and goodness. At your right hand are pleasures forevermore. You're the compassionate and gracious God, and we draw near. Lord, you don't withhold anything good from those who are steadfast. Today we give you our hearts and our trust. We say to you: "You are my Lord, I have no good apart from you" (Psalm 16:2).

A Prayer of Intercession:

Lord, we pray for those who are experiencing trials and temptations. Give vision and power to see and overcome. For those among us who are sick, bring your healing grace and restore them, Lord. For those under severe temptation and wandering, oh God, do what you need to do to wake them up and restore them. Keep your church from deception and help us to see you clearly and walk in your ways.

As we listen to the passage again, listen to how the Psalmist views God, and ask the Lord to give you vision to see him rightly:

And now, our weekly verse to memorize and embrace:

James 1:12

"Blessed is the one who perseveres under trial, because having stood the test, that person will receive the crown of life that the Lord has promised to those who love him."

A Closing Prayer:

Lord, we love you. We trust you. We thank you for all the good gifts that you've given us. We especially thank you for the gift of life that we've been given through Jesus Christ our Lord. Guard us and keep us until the end.

Hear this good news from Jude as we close:

"To him who is able to keep you from stumbling and to present you before his glorious presence without fault and with great joy—to the only God our Savior be glory, majesty, power, and authority, through Jesus Christ our Lord, before all ages, now and forevermore. Amen." (Jude 1:24-25)
